William Gowland (1842-1922) worked as a technical advisor to the Japanese Ministry of Finance at the Imperial Japanese Mint in Osaka in the Meiji Era.
He also conducted the first truly accurate scientific surveys of burial mounds, including Imperial mausolea.
Meiji University Museum will hold a special exhibition on Gowland’s research, including collections from the British Museum.
