At the Society’s Annual Dinner held on 20th November, Mr. Tim Minton, Chairman of the Awards Committee announced the recipient of this year’s Japan-British Society Award, Mr. Hisaaki Yamanouchi and the inscribed silverware was presented.
Mr. Hisaaki Yamanouchi:
Professor Emeritus of University of Tokyo, born in Hiroshima City in 1934. Graduated from the College of Arts and Sciences, University of Tokyo, Department of Liberal Arts (British Studies). Since receiving his doctorate degree at Cambridge in 1975, he has taught at several universities and inspired many young students through his lectures and books on the UK in general and English literature in particular. Some of those students have become academics themselves, passing on the torch from Prof. Yamanouchi to the future generations. His influence is not limited to the pure academic world. His lectures for continuing education through TV/on-line were watched by numerous people, and his translation of poems of Wordsworth was a popular hit. His publications include The Search for Authenticity in Modern Japanese Literature (Cambridge University Press, 1978), Bilingual Selected Poems of William Wordsworth (Iwanami, 1998) and the English translation of Oe Kenzaburo’s Nobel Laureate Lecture, “Japan, the Ambiguous, and Myself” (Kodansha International, 1995) etc. He is a long-time JBS member.
