The Society is delighted that Prof. Shoichiro Kawai has agreed to give an online lecture (in Japanese) on “Learning from Shakespeare how to live in the Corona era”.

Shoichiro Kawai is a Professor at the University of Tokyo.
He is a translator of Shakespeare’s works and was awarded the 23rd Suntory Award for his book Hamlet was Fat! He has worked with various celebrated directors, including Tadashi Suzuki, Jonathan Kent, Greg Doran, Yukio Ninagawa, and Simon Godwin, and has produced Kyogen adaptations of Shakespeare’s works in collaboration with Mansai Nomura, the Kyogen performer. Kawai’s publications include The Routledge Companion to Directors’ Shakespeare (London and New York: Routledge, 2008), and The Cambridge Guide to the Worlds of Shakespeare (Cambridge University Press, 2016). He also contributed to Shakespeare Survey 62 (2009) and 64 (2011). Since 2014, he has been the director of his Kawai Project, which was awarded the Yushi Odashima Drama Award. In July 2021, he will preside over the Round Table on Translation and Shakespeare at the World Shakespeare Congress.
