Published on the 170th birth anniversary and the 110th death anniversary of Emperor Meiji, this collection of the Emperor’s poems has been painstakingly translated into English over half a century. The poems embody the essence of Meiji culture and are presented in Japanese and English side by side. The translations are by Harold Wright, who pursued Japanese poetry studies and, who at the recommendation of his mentor Donald Keene, was assigned to translate the waka of Emperor Meiji into English.
