“The Sakura Cherry Tree Project” was launched in the joint communique issued by former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and then Prime Minister Teresa May in 2017 to mark the 150 years of UK-Japan relations and further cooperation between the two nations. More than 6,000 cherry trees were planted throughout the UK in 2020 and into 2021, and these have come into flower this year. The JBS took the leading role in raising funds for this project and many corporate members have kindly made donations. We are happy to report that this project was awarded the Foreign Minister’s Commendations by the Japanese Government in August this year.
