Mark-Anthony Turnage is one of the most important composers on the contemporary British music scene. He is devoted to modern jazz and incorporates its diction into many of his works, and his jazzy sound is one of his major characteristics. This concert was composed of Turnage’s own selections. “Last Song for Olly” is a tribute to his composer teacher Oliver Knussen, and “Remembering” is a tribute to his close friend John Scofield’s son who died young. Each piece is a memorial work.
