The exhibition of his works at the Paris World Exposition in 1878 provided Watanabe Seitei with his first opportunity to visit France as a Nihonga painter. He is little remembered today, but during his lifetime he came to be highly regarded in Europe and America, and his works can be found in major Western museums. Tokyo University of the Arts is holding an exhibition of Seitei’s finest works, which is meaningful not only for students of art history, but also for art lovers in general who want a chance to discover new and fascinating aspects of the history of Nihonga.
※Reservations are not required but, please check the website before visiting in case changes have to be made because of the pandemic.
