The Daiwa Scholarship is a unique programme which offers young and talented UK citizens the opportunity to acquire Japanese language skills, and to gain expertise and knowledge relevant to their career goals. The programme is funded by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation (DAJF) for the purpose of promoting exchanges and better understanding between the UK and Japan.

The Junior Group again held a BBQ party to welcome the Daiwa Scholars. The Cambridge University Pembroke players attended the event as well.

Mr. Koichi Obi (the founder of “Cotsworld Ltd.” and a JBS Member) gave a talk in Japanese on British houses and architectures using many pictures, including those of Highclere Castle (the location of the “Downton Abbey” drama series). Auberge de l’ill Tokyo, an elegant restaurant in a Georgian townhouse, served a set lunch to participants.

A wine tasting was held in cooperation with the Japan Office of Berry Bros. & Rudd. Participants received an English explanation about 4 English sparkling wines, and red and white wines.

Supported by Aston Martin Japan Ltd., the Society hosted a special lecture given by Dr. Vish Krishnan (Professor, University of California San Diego), whose research focuses on science and technology-driven innovation, sustainable growth, new product design and development. He talked in English on “Innovation and Graceful Growth: Aston Martin and the Global Industrial Economy”.

Mt. Mitake, a 929m high mountain in Oume city, in the suburbs of Tokyo, has a popular hiking course for beginners. Participants visited Mt. Mitake shrine, and enjoyed hiking.

The Society held a summer cocktail party jointly with the BCCJ and Tokyo Chamber of Commerce at Andaz Tokyo.
We enjoyed amazing views of Tokyo from the rooftop terrace on a warm summer evening.
