Mr. Masaya Tatebayashi, a JBS Member and a Kew-trained horticulturist, will give a lecture on English gardening and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
A professional horticulturist, Mr. Tatebayashi is the first Japanese gentleman to have gained a Kew Diploma. He will give a lecture (in Japanese) illustrated with an abundance of photos, which will give you a better understanding of English gardening, along with many tips for your own gardens. Masaya Tatebayashi, Dip Hort Kew (Hons), Consulting Arborist
After working in banking for 10 years, Mr Tatebayashi went to England to study horticulture, where he learnt the basics at a horticultural college in York. He then gained practical experience at the Cambridge University Botanic Garden and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. He returned to Tokyo in 2006 and now works as a freelance horticultural consultant based in Tokyo.

This year our big summer party will be held at the newly-opened Sky Beer Garden at the Hilton Tokyo.
Members of the British Chamber of Commerce in Japan (BCCJ), the Japan British Society (JBS), British Market Council (BMC) and the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) will come together to bid sayonara to the first half of 2018.

Members had another opportunity to attend the Epsom Cup Race held annually to commemorate the partnership between Epsom Race Course in the UK and Tokyo Race Course. Participants enjoyed watching the horseracing from a VIP guest room.

Pursuant to Article 14 (pertaining to Ordinary and Extraordinary General Meetings) and Article 15 (pertaining to Convocation) of the Constitution, the Society held a General Meeting on Tuesday, 26th June at Gakushi Kaikan. After the official business, a cocktail party was held.

On 19th May, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle exchanged wedding vows in St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.
The Society held a Royal Wedding-Viewing Party jointly with BCCJ and other UK-related organisations.
Thanks to the BBC, we enjoyed live coverage of the big event on screens all around the venue.

An exhibition “Turner and the Poetics of Landscape” has been held at Seiji Togo Memorial Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Museum of Art (4/24-7/1).

Members of the Society were invited to a special lecture by Mr Shinichi Tomioka, Curator of Koriyama City Museum of Art and supervisor of this exhibition, followed by an individual gallery visit. (The lecture is in Japanese.)
Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance Inc. is kindly providing space for the lecture.

Ms Noriko Hama, a well-known economic commentator and columnist, gave this year’s Princess Chichibu Memorial Lecture. Her title was “What’s the Matter with Japan and the UK: in search of lost identities”.

A Japanese Calligraphy Workshop was held under Ms Ayako Someya (a JBS Member and Japanese Calligrapher). Participants had the opportunity to try their hand at writing characters with an ink brush on Japanese paper.
