Natsume Soseki Memorial Museum opened in September this year, and the Society has arranged a tour, together with a lecture by Ms Yuko Nagashima (lecturer at Waseda Univ.), who will talk in Japanese about Soseki’s letters from London.

Ms Tamao Sako is a well-known cooking instructor specialising in British puddings.
She held a Christmas Pudding Seminar for JBS members.
Participants enjoyed Christmas pudding, Victoria sponge cake, mulled wine, spiced tea after the lesson.

As a follow-up to the special gallery tour last year, members of the Society were invited to an exhibition of the works of Uemura Shoen, a great master of Japanese-style painting who is especially well known for his depictions of Japanese women in kimonos.
Participants were given a guided tour by Ms Taeko Yamazaki, Director of Yamatane Museum of Art.

Members of the Society enjoyed a tour of the State Guest House, Akasaka Palace, where heads of the state and other visiting dignitaries stay, and where various diplomatic events are held.
Participants visited the main building and garden.

The Society’s Annual Golf Tournament was held again at Hodogaya C.C. The Princess Chichibu Memorial Trophy was awarded to Mr Nagata.

The Daiwa Scholarship is a unique programme offering young and talented UK citizens the opportunity to acquire Japanese language skills, and to gain expertise and knowledge relevant to their career goals.
The Junior Group again held a BBQ party to welcome the Daiwa Scholars arriving this September.

This event is organized in cooperation with The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation.

The Tokyo Metro (underground) started operations in 1927 and marks its 90th anniversary this year. JBS members were exclusively invited to the Tokyo Metro Training Centre in Shinkiba to see the model station used for training.

Bus Tour to Nikko:
Former British Embassy Villa, Kanaya Cottage Inn Museum and Nikko Toshogu Shrine

The Society arranged a day trip to Nikko.
Participants visited the former British Embassy villa by Lake Chuzenji and the Kanaya Cottage Inn Museum, where Isabella Bird stayed in 1878; she later wrote about her stay in Unbeaten Tracks in Japan.
We also had a guided tour of Nikko Toshogu Shrine, a World Heritage Site, where we saw the renovated Yomeimon Gate (a National Treasure) and participated in a prayer session in the special Shogun’s Room.

JBS member Ms Sakura Aoyama, a jewellery adviser, gave a lecture on early 20th-century fashion and jewellery, as seen in the popular TV drama series Downton Abbey.
Before the lecture, participants enjoyed lunch at the Ogasawara Hakushakutei Restaurant, which used to be the residence of Count Nagayoshi Ogasawara, a JBS members in the early 20th century.
