Pursuant to Article 14 (Ordinary and Extraordinary General Meeting) and 15 (Convocation) of the constitution, The Japan-British Society will hold a General Meeting on Friday, 21st June at the Conference Square M+ in Marunouchi.
At the conclusion of the official business there will be a cocktail party at which refreshments will be served.

Individual Members are kindly requested to return the postcard enclosed with April notice by 10th June.
For Corporate Members, we have sent just one postcard by separate mail to the person in charge of the JBS membership.

We will have another chance to go the Epsom Cup Race which is held annually to commemorate the partnership between Epsom Race Course in the UK and the Tokyo Race Course.

Participants will enjoy horseracing in a VIP guest room and have lunch. For reservations, please register your name and phone number with the JBS Secretariat. As space is limited, JBS members will have priority.

The Junior Group will visit the Life Safety Learning Centre and experience various disasters through simulation machines. It will be a good opportunity to learn how to protect yourself from disasters!
We will experience an Earthquake simulation machine, a 30kph Rainstorm simulation machine, Fire fighting training and a Smoke maze.

If you wish to join the tour, please register your name and phone number with the JBS Secretariat. The meeting place and time will be provided to the participants. Please note that elementary school students and below must be accompanied by parents, and some experience machines have age limits.

An exhibition on “Natsume Soseki and Arts” will be held at the Museum of Tokyo University of the Arts from 14th May this year. In relation to this exhibition, Ms Takako Saito of Waseda Univ. will give a lecture about Natsume Soseki and his time in London, focusing on his interest in British art. (The lecture will be in Japanese.) This is the first session of a series of two art lectures. Takako Saito was born and raised in Yokohama, Japan. She received B.A. and M.A. degrees from Waseda University (Englsih Literature and Education), where she completed a Doctoral Course and has become a part-time lecturer. She also teaches at the Graduate School of Humanities, Sophia University. She has recently been studying the cultural interaction between English Literature and Art; main publications are “The World of Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood”, “Life Begins Again: Love in English Literature”, “Romantic Women Poets; An Anthology”. She is also one of the editors of “The 21st Century Encyclopaedia of British Culture”, and the coauthor of “London’s Best Museum”, “Love and Dreams: An Anthology of English Poetry”, “Hogarth and His Age; Eighteenth-Century England in Satirical Prints and Paintings”.

There will be a visit to the photo exhibition “Twin Time Travel: Isabella Bird’s Travel” at the Komaba Museum of the University of Tokyo. A gallery talk (in Japanese) will be provided for the JBS tour by Professor Emeritus Kiyonori Kanesaka of Kyoto Univ., who has published three volumes of translations of “Unbeaten Tracks of Japan” by Isabella Bird. Participants will have lunch at the canteen and will also enjoy a campus tour through the kind arrangement of the Komaba Museum.

A welcome party for new members will be held. We hope this will be a good opportunity for new members to get together and make new friends. Not only new members who joined the Society between April 2012 and March 2013, but also members who joined in recent years, and who have not attended any events for a while, will be welcome.

This party is only for JBS members, but if you wish to bring guests who are interested in the Society, please do so. Free of charge (some snacks and drink will be prepared).

There will be a tour to the Tokyo Sky Tree and Asakusa area. Many members joined the Society’s event to visit the Tokyo Sky Tree under construction in September 2011.
It officially opened in May 2012 and now we can enjoy a panoramic view of Tokyo from above.
Participants will have lunch at a famous “Unagi” (Japanese eel) restaurant in Asakusa and walk along the Sumida River. As space is limited, places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. (applications by 15th March)

The Society has organised an outing to “Kosoen” (the Murano House, a registered cultural asset) located in Kodaira. Participants will walk under the beautiful cherry trees in full bloom (we hope!) through the Kodaira public cemetery, enjoy a guided tour (English available) in the “Kosoen” and have green tea and Japanese sweets in the house. Detailed information will be sent to participants about 1 week in advance. (applications by 22nd March)

Following the successful event of Feb. 2011, we invite Ms Sarah Sato again to read Shakespeare’s “Richard III” in English with Japanese translation. Participants will also enjoy cream tea at the venue, the Shangri-La Hotel Tokyo. (applications by 15th March)

Sarah Sato
is a British-educated Japanese theatre practitioner. Based in Tokyo, she organises her own theatre company, “Players”, which mainly performs Shakespeare’s works. She first went to Britain to study history and then moved on to theatre.
She trained as an actor at the Cygnet Training Theatre from 1999-2002, and continued on to Exeter University where she gained her MFA in Staging Shakespeare. Later in 2006 she also completed the Master Course of Acting Shakespeare at RADA.
Since coming back to Japan, Her main interest has been to introduce original Shakespeare to Japanese audience, and her recent works include one woman shows of Hamlet, Twelfth Night, Julius Caesar(2011), As You Like It, Cymbeline, Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth(2012).

The Junior group will go to The National Art Centre Tokyo to see the exhibition “Artist File 2013”.
A Junior Committee member will explain briefly about the works (E/J), so why don’t we go and enjoy the exhibition together on this opportunity? Details will be provided to the participants about a week in advance.
