The annual dinner of the Society was held on 25th November.
This year we were pleased to welcome Mr Peter Tasker as the guest speaker. The JBS Awards was presented at the dinner.

Peter Tasker
is recognized as one of the foremost authorities on Japanese finance, economics and culture. Ranked as the No. 1 equity strategist by Japanese institutional investors for five years running, Mr. Tasker was Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein’s market strategist in Tokyo from 1983 to 1998. A British national, Mr. Tasker first came to Japan in 1977. He has written a number of critically acclaimed books on the Japanese economy based on his long experience with the country. He has also been a columnist for Newsweek Japan for ten years and is a well-known TV commentator. Mr. Tasker won an open scholarship to Balliol College (Oxford University) where he read English Literature and subsequently Law.

In 1975, the Society held a luncheon at the Imperial Hotel to welcome HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh to Japan.

To mark the 40th anniversary of this event, the Society held an afternoon tea party at the same hotel. Some photos of the royal visit was on display.

The Society arranged a 90 minute cruise on the River Kanda from Nihombashi through Ryogoku, Ochanomizu and Hitotsubashi. It was raining during the tour, but participants enjoyed a different view of downtown Tokyo from the river.

A Sherry Tasting Seminar was held at “Sherry Museum”, a unique sherry bar in Gotanda. Participants tasted 3 kinds of sherry accompanied by a plate of appetizers.

To commemorate the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Satsuma students in Britain, the Society, in cooperation with the Kagoshima JBS, held a special lecture jointly with Toyo Bunko Museum, Prof. Izumi Haraguchi talked on the Satsuma Students and Godai Tomoatsu, one of the 19 students, who became a leading entrepreneur in the Meiji era. Participants also enjoyed the exhibition “Bakumatsu Ten” being held at the Toyo Bunko Museum.

On the kind introduction of the Meiji Jingu Intercultural Research Institute, the Society organised a guided tour of the Meiji Shrine.
After watching a video about the Shrine, participants visited the special prayer compound for the performance of an exclusive and beautiful Shinto ceremony.

The Junior Group visited British Hills in Fukushima. We had a guided tour in English, and participated in a cooking seminar, and enjoyed a full course dinner.

The Daiwa Scholarship is a unique programme which offers young and talented UK citizens the opportunity to acquire Japanese language skills, and to gain expertise and knowledge relevant to their career goals. The programme is funded by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation (DAJF) for the purpose of promoting exchanges and better understanding between the UK and Japan.

The Junior Group again held a BBQ party to welcome the Daiwa Scholars. The Cambridge University Pembroke players attended the event as well.

Mr. Koichi Obi (the founder of “Cotsworld Ltd.” and a JBS Member) gave a talk in Japanese on British houses and architectures using many pictures, including those of Highclere Castle (the location of the “Downton Abbey” drama series). Auberge de l’ill Tokyo, an elegant restaurant in a Georgian townhouse, served a set lunch to participants.
