JBS held a Charity Raffle party to raise money for the relief effort for the Kumamoto Earthquake.
All the proceeds of the sale of raffle tickets (JPY500 per ticket) went to a charity for Earthquake relief.

There were various UK related prizes, including an autographed book by Sir Ian McKellen (known as Gandalf of The Lord of the Rings) who kindly donated it for this event.
Some sandwiches, scones and drinks were prepared and participants enjoyed the tea party.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of its foundation, a series of special exhibitions was held at Idemitsu Museum of Arts in Marunouchi.
The Society had a special gallery tour thanks to the kind cooperation by Dr. Sachiko Idemitsu (a JBS Member).
There was a lecture on the exhibition “Edo no hanayagi” followed by a guided tour in English.

Pursuant to Article 14 (Ordinary and Extraordinary General Meeting) and 15 (Convocation) of the constitution, the Society held a General Meeting on Wednesday, 22nd June at the Conference Square M+ in Marunouchi. At the conclusion of the official business there was a cocktail party.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Beatrix Potter who wrote and illustrated the famous “Peter Rabbit” stories.
An exhibition on Peter Rabbit will take place at “Bunkamura The Museum” in Shibuya this summer.

Professor Yoshihide Kawano of Daito Bunka University gave a lecture in Japanese on the life of Beatrix Potter and the forthcoming exhibition.

The National Theatre presented a special programme for foreigners, “Discover Bunraku”. Daniel Kahl gave an introductory lecture (in English) about Bunraku (traditional Japanese puppet theatre) followed by a live performance of “Sonezaki Shinju”, a masterpiece of Bunraku created about 300 years ago, set in the Edo period, depicting the tragedy of two young lovers.

A visit to Hatoyama Hall and Japan Women’s University Naruse Memorial Museum was held.
Hatoyama Hall was the residence of Ichiro Hatoyama, famous Japanese politician and Prime Minister of Japan in the1950s. It is now open as a museum and it also has a beautiful rose garden.
Japan Women’s University was founded by Jinzo Naruse in 1901 as the first women’s university in Japan. We visited both places and had lunch at a restaurant nearby.

This year’s welcome party for new members was held at a pub in FooTNiK Ebisu. We enjoyed British food and Bingo game.

This year marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death and the Society arranged a visit to the Waseda University Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum. Tsubouchi Shoyo was a Japanese author, critic, playwright, translator, editor, educator and professor at Waseda University. He is known as the first translator of the complete works of Shakespeare and he contributed to the development of modern theatre in Japan.
Participants had a guided tour of the museum followed by tea and cakes at a cafe on the campus.

Shakespeare and Music
Mrs Makiko Nagata (a JBS member) gave us a lesson in arranging preserved flower. Participants made a small arrangement of roses.
