This year marks the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death and the Society arranged a visit to the Waseda University Tsubouchi Memorial Theatre Museum. Tsubouchi Shoyo was a Japanese author, critic, playwright, translator, editor, educator and professor at Waseda University. He is known as the first translator of the complete works of Shakespeare and he contributed to the development of modern theatre in Japan.
Participants had a guided tour of the museum followed by tea and cakes at a cafe on the campus.

Shakespeare and Music
Mrs Makiko Nagata (a JBS member) gave us a lesson in arranging preserved flower. Participants made a small arrangement of roses.

The Junior Group’s annual spring event has traditionally been a hanami party, but this year we held a “St. Georges Day” party to commemorate the death of Saint George, the patron saint of England, on 23 April, 303 AD. Please wear something red and white at the party.
There was a live performance by a singer-songwriter Ms. Sara Akino.

A team of people at Chelsea College of Arts, University of the Arts London is working on a reconstruction project in Kamaishi, Tohoku.
JBS arranged a lecture meeting inviting Prof. Chris Wainwright and Mr. Robin Jenkins to make a presentation on their three projects; ESCAPE ROUTE, We Are All Stars (photo exhibition) and Atlantic Pacific International Rescue Boat Project that are currently underway.

Holy Resurrection Cathedral, Yushima-seido and Kanda Myojin
The Society had a guided tour (in Japanese) of the Holy Resurrection Cathedral (Nikolai-do), Yushima-seido and Kanda Myojin.
The Nikolai-do, the main cathedral of the Autonomous Orthodox Church in Japan, was built in 1891 to a design by Josiah Conder.

Ms Mariko Oi gave this year’s Princess Chichibu Memorial Lecture entitled “Reporting about my home country to British and global audiences”.
A reception followed thanks to the generous hospitality of Ueno Gakuen.

Mariko Oi has been a reporter for BBC World News since 2006. Based in Singapore, she reports for, and presents, Newsday and Asia Business Report. Before joining BBC World News, Mariko gained her knowledge of finance at Bloomberg Television where she was a Tokyo-based producer for 2 years. As an intern or student, Mariko also worked for Reuters Television, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, SBS, Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network, WOWOW Television (a Japanese satellite broadcaster), Channel 31 (an Australian community channel) and SYN FM radio. Born in Japan, Mariko grew up in Tokyo until the age of 16. She then went to Australia to study English, where she earned a Bachelor of Communication in Journalism with First Class Honours.

The JBS held a tea seminar at the renovated Sir Thomas Lipton Tea House in the Ginza.
Participants tasted various teas from different regions and compared the taste of tea made with hard and soft water.

The Junior Group held its annual Omochitsuki Party at Le Keyaki.
This year, Paddington helped us pounding rice cakes!

Thanks to the kind introduction of the Meiji Jingu Intercultural Research Institute, the Society organised a guided tour of the Meiji Shrine.
Participants visited the special prayer compound for a performance of an exclusive and beautiful Shinto ceremony.
This was a repeat event for those who could not join the first tour on 7th October.
