Pursuant to Article 14 (Ordinary and Extraordinary General Meeting) and 15 (Convocation) of the new constitution, The Japan-British Society will hold a General Meeting on Tuesday 12th June. At the conclusion of the official business there will be a cocktail party at which refreshments will be served.

Please find the details enclosed with this April Notice. Members are kindly requested to return the postcard by 25th May. From this year Family Members are entitled to have two votes so we would like each to return the proxy card.
For Corporate Members, we will send just one postcard by separate mail to the person in charge of the JBS membership.

To follow the popular tour held in 2008, there will be another visit to the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
Participants will see the market centre, the stock investment work-study corner, the history of TSE corner, and some areas which will be shown exclusively to JBS members. For British participants, an explanation will be provided by an English-speaking guide.
The tour fee includes lunch at the TSE staff canteen. To join the tour, please register your full name and phone number with the JBS Secretariat by e-mail or by telephone no later than 5th June and make full payment to our bank account.
Full details will be sent to participants around 7th June.

Haiku is a very short poem about nature and has become very popular in languages other than Japanese, most often in English, especially on the internet among people all over the world.

Ms Emiko Miyashita presents a brief introduction to Japanese and English haiku, sharing many good poems to discover the world of Haiku. After the presentation, participants will compose some English haiku over a cup of Japanese tea and sweets.

Emiko Miyashita is a dojin or leading member of the Ten’i haiku group led by Dr. Akito Arima. She is a member of the Association of Haiku Poets and the International Haiku Association. She also writes haiku in English and is a member of Haiku Canada. Since 1999, she has been translating Japanese haiku into English with her translation partner, Lee Gurga, the editor of Modern Haiku (USA). Her latest translation is Hyakunin Isshu (P.I.E.Books).

The Junior group will reserve a double-decker bus and hold a party on its upper floor. Enjoy the drinks and the view of the city with members. The bus will leave from Roppongi, drive through the city and arrive at Shibuya where we are planning to have an “after party” (Nijikai).

The annual Gala Party will be held. This year to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in the UK.
There will be a bagpipe performance by the Tokyo Pipe Band, which will create a more celebratory atmosphere.

If you would like to attend the party, please register your full name, address and telephone number with the Secretariat by mail, fax or e-mail no later than 8th May. For those who can attend, an admission card, including payment details, will be sent by post or by e-mail after 8th May.

There will be a guided tour of Wakeii-juku Honkan which was built in 1936 by the 16th marquess of Hosokawa, Moritatsu Hosokawa. This Tudor style building is a typical nobleman's house, and was registered as a tangible cultural asset in Tokyo in March 2000.
Participants will enjoy a guided tour (in Japanese) and have lunch at a nearby restaurant. To book, please register your name and phone number to the JBS Secretariat. Participants will receive an invitation 1 week in advance.

A welcome party for new members will be held. We hope this will be a good opportunity for new members to get together and make new friends.
Not only new members who joined the Society between April 2011 and March 2012, but also members who joined in recent years, and who have not attended any events for a while, will be welcome.
This party is only for JBS members, but if you wish to bring guests who are interested in the Society, please do so.

There were many people on the waiting list for the visit held in November 2011 and another tour is now scheduled. For the JBS tour, Mr Makiyama, the owner and manager of “Buaiso”, will kindly give a lecture in Japanese on Jiro and Masako Shirasu.
Jiro Shirasu studied at Cambridge University before the War and played important roles after the War in Japan. This will be an interesting visit to learn about Jiro and Masako’s lives.

Mr. David Fitton, British Minister to Japan, has kindly agreed to give a lecture as an event of the Society. He will talk on current UK issues and UK-Japan relations in English. Participants will also enjoy authentic afternoon tea in the cordial atmosphere of the Restaurant in Tokyo.

If you wish to attend the event, please contact the Secretariat by e-mail or telephone.
Event fees are required to be paid in advance by bank transfers by the closing date. Please note that no refunds will be made for cancellations after the closing date, and no-shows will be charged.
